How To Sync TweetDeck Across Multiple Computers In Three Easy Steps

tweetdeck_betaTweetDeck is pure brilliance. If you’re following more than 50 people or so (which I’ll bet you are), naturally you’ll want to segment the people you’re following by categories of your own choosing. Otherwise, Twitter is just a mass of roiling data, constantly pushing at you like tireless waves of the ocean.

The unbrilliant thing about TweetDeck is that there isn’t a simple way to synchronize it across multiple computers (perhaps because it’s still in beta). The good news is that there’s a fairly simple workaround, for Mac- & Windows-users alike. All you have to do is copy a single folder from the computer that has TweetDeck configured to your liking to the computer/s you’d like to configure similarly.

First, make sure that the most current version of TweetDeck is installed on all the machines you want to sync. Then quit TweetDeck on all of your computers.

Second, on the machine that has TweetDeck configured as you like (and wish to copy to your other computers), locate the following folder:

On the Mac
user/Library/Preferences/TweetDeckFast(+ a bunch of numbers)/Local Store/

On Windows Vista
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\TweetDeckFast.(+ a bunch of numbers)\Local Store

Third, move this folder to the computer to which you’d like to copy your tricked-out TweetDeck configuration. Replace the contents of the existing “Local Store” folder.

Now open TweetDeck on the computer to which you’ve added your TweetDeck info and you’ll see that presto! you’ve just synced your computers.

In order to keep the computers synced, you’ll need to do this manually every once and a while. Not ideal, but it’s better than trying to deal with roiling masses of unorganized Twitter data.

See you in the Twitterverse…
